Vorige week bracht het IPCC, het internationaal klimaatpanel van de VN haar 6de rapport uit. De boodschap is opnieuw duidelijk: wie vandaag wordt geboren, ondervindt een veel grotere impact van de klimaatverandering dan zijn ouders of grootouders. Federaal parlementslid Kim Buys (Groen) kroop in haar pen.

De broeikasuitstoot moet nu meteen drastisch naar beneden, schrijven wetenschappers in een nieuw rapport van het VN-klimaatpanel. ‘Alle landen gaan akkoord’, zegt co-hoofdauteur Detlef van Vuuren.

It took me a while but I finally digested the 107 pages of Chapter 5: Demand, services and social aspects of mitigation in the last IPCC report on Mitigation of climate change. This chapter is worth the read if only because it’s the first one fully dedicated to demand-side strategies. What I find remarkable is its conceptual width, including a few ideas that are usually considered too radical in these kind of venues. But just like the rest of the report, it is long and – as academic writing too often is – full of abstract jargon and somnolent prose. What I want to do in this article is to explain why Chapter 5 is more radical (in the good sense of the term) that you may think.

In een reactie op de publicatie vandaag van het rapport van werkgroep III van het IPCC over de beperking van klimaatverandering, zei Nafkote Dabi, hoofd klimaatbeleid van Oxfam: "Dit IPCC-rapport laat niets aan het toeval over. The Working Group II contribution to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report assesses the impacts of climate change, looking at ecosystems, biodiversity, and human communities at global and regional levels. It also reviews vulnerabilities and the capacities and limits of the natural world and human societies to adapt to climate change.

In Paris, all governments solemnly promised to come to COP26 with more ambitious 2030 commitments to close the massive 2030 emissions gap that was already evident in 2015. A huge leak of documents seen by BBC News shows how countries are trying to change a crucial scientific report on how to tackle climate change. The leak reveals Saudi Arabia, Japan and Australia are among countries asking the UN to play down the need to move rapidly away from fossil fuels.

The second draft of the IPCC Group III report, focused on mitigation strategies, states that we must move away from the current capitalist model to avoid surpassing planetary boundaries and climate and ecological catastrophe). It also confirms our previous reports, covered by CTXT and The Guardian, that “greenhouse gas emissions must peak in the next four years”. The new leak acknowledges that there is little or no room for further economic growth.

Australian scientists have challenged the latest UN-backed global warming report, saying it underestimated the likelihood major weather events driven by processes in the Pacific will become more extreme as the planet heats.

Nadat het VN-klimaatpanel IPCC maandagochtend haar rapport naar buiten bracht, stromen de eerste reacties binnen. Onder andere Brits premier Boris Johnson en klimaatactiviste Greta Thunberg lieten hun bezorgdheid al blijken en riepen op tot actie. De meesten richten het vizier al op Glasgow, waar dit najaar een ‘cruciale’ klimaattop plaatsvindt.

Remarkably there are still some who, despite years of accumulating scientific evidence and a summer of extraordinary extreme weather events, continue to deny the reality of climate change or the role of humans in causing it. As the world battles historic droughts, landscape-altering wildfires and deadly floods, a landmark report from global scientists says the window is rapidly closing to cut our reliance on fossil fuels and avoid catastrophic changes that would transform life as we know it. The state-of-the-science report from the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says the world has rapidly warmed 1.1 degrees Celsius higher than pre-industrial levels, and is now careening toward 1.5 degrees — a critical threshold that world leaders agreed warming should remain below to avoid worsening impacts.

Human activity is changing the climate in unprecedented and sometimes irreversible ways, a major UN scientific report has said. The landmark study warns of increasingly extreme heatwaves, droughts and flooding, and a key temperature limit being broken in just over a decade. The report "is a code red for humanity", says the UN chief.

The Working Group I contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report addresses the most up-to-date physical understanding of the climate system and climate change, bringing together the latest advances in climate science, and combining multiple lines of evidence from paleoclimate, observations, process understanding, and global and regional climate simulations.

The report’s conclusion that staying below 2°C this century will only happen if emissions reach net zero by 2050 is well publicised. But there is one, rather more urgent addendum to that: global emissions must peak some time in the middle of this decade. In other words, within the next few years.

De opwarming van de aarde is 'ondubbelzinnig' een gevolg van de menselijke activiteit. Dat is maandag de conclusie van het IPCC, het wetenschappelijk klimaatpanel van de Verenigde Naties (VN), in zijn zesde rapport over de klimaatverandering.

Het Klimaatpanel van de Verenigde Naties (IPCC) heeft het eerste deel van zijn zesde evaluatierapport (Assessment Report 6 - Working Group 1: De wetenschappelijke basis van klimaatverandering) gepubliceerd. Dit rapport, waarvan de redactie in 2017-2018 opstartte, bundelt de meest recente en uitgebreide wetenschappelijke kennis over het klimaatsysteem en de klimaatverandering tot nu toe. Het vorige rapport van dit type dateert van 2013-2014.

Zonder onmiddellijke en grootschalige actie zal het niet lukken de temperatuurstijging de komende twintig jaar te beperken tot 1,5 graden. Dat staat in een nieuw rapport, het eerste in acht jaar, van het IPCC, het klimaatorgaan van de Verenigde Naties.

Als we niet snel handelen, kunnen we de opwarming van de aarde niet beperken tot 1,5 graad of halen we zelfs de 2 graden niet. Dat is de voornaamste conclusie van het nieuwste klimaatrapport van het IPCC. ‘De mens is verantwoordelijk voor de klimaatverandering. Het is nu aan de mens om het tij te keren.’

Maandag verschijnt het langverwachte nieuwe rapport van het Wetenschappelijke VN-klimaatpanel (IPCC), dat de laatste wetenschappelijke kennis rond de klimaatverandering bundelt. Wat kunnen we verwachten? Klimaatexpert Alex Crawford ziet vijf belangrijke aandachtspunten.

How sensitive is the climate to increasing carbon dioxide? What’s going on with clouds? Did climate change fuel recent extreme weather? Have regional climate projections improved? How will Antarctic ice sheets contribute to sea-level rise?

Dat die staat belabberd is, zal niet verbazen. Maar hoe belabberd het klimaat ervoor staat en hoe desastreus de gevolgen op korte termijn zijn, dat blijkt uit dit voorlopige rapport.

In December 2020, 50 of the world’s leading biodiversity and climate experts, selected by a 12-person Scientific Steering Committee assembled by IPBES and IPCC, participated in a four-day virtual workshop to examine the synergies and trade-offs between biodiversity protection and climate change mitigation and adaptation. This represents the first-ever collaboration between the two intergovernmental science-policy bodies.

The IPCC report sets out the world’s current knowledge of the impacts of 1.5C of warming and clearly shows the dangers of breaching such a limit. However, many scientists are increasingly worried about factors about which we know much less. These “known unknowns” of climate change are tipping points, or feedback mechanisms within the climate system – thresholds that, if passed, could send the Earth into a spiral of runaway climate change.
