Global projections of macroeconomic climate-change damages typically consider impacts from average annual and national temperatures over long time horizons1–6. Here we use recent empirical findings from more than 1,600 regions worldwide over the past 40 years to project sub-national damages from temperature and precipitation, including daily variability and extremes7,8. Using an empirical approach that provides a robust lower bound on the persistence of impacts on economic growth, we find that the world economy is committed to an income reduction of 19% within the next 26 years independent of future emission choices (relative to a baseline without climate impacts, likely range of 11–29% accounting for physical climate and empirical uncertainty). These damages already outweigh the mitigation costs required to limit global warming to 2 °C by sixfold over this near-term time frame and thereafter diverge strongly dependent on emission choices. Tant l’œuvre que la vie du philosophe Günther Anders offrent des éléments pour fonder l’action écologiste autrement que dans l’espoir « d’une vie meilleure », « des jours heureux » et « du monde d’après ». Au lieu de s’exposer à l’anxiété, la dépression et au nihilisme, il propose politiquement de retrouver de la morale dans l’existence, chose que la modernité évince constamment par ses artifices, sa complexité, son conformisme et son productivisme. C’est certainement dans le devoir et la responsabilité que se trouvent les ressources pour engager l’action politique avec joie et humanité, quoi qu’il advienne.

The book Limits and Beyond, edited by Ugo Bardi and Carlos Alwarez Pereira, provides a 50th anniversary review of the seminal report Limits to Growth (LtG). They told us that, on our current path, we are heading for collapse in the first half of the 21st century. This book, published in the year 2022, reviews what has happened in the intervening time period. It asks three basic questions:

Ce mémoire est l’aboutissement d’un parcours d’étude unifié par le souci du monde. Après une licence de sciences informatiques, un bachelor de sciences sociales et un double master de sciences et politiques environnementales, la distance réflexive sur les problématiques globales me semblait toujours fragile. Au printemps 2019, dans le cadre de l’enseignement Théories et Politiques de la Décroissance (Sciences Po) assuré par Agnès Sinaï (Institut Momentum) et Luc Semal (Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle), j’ai néanmoins été invité à découvrir le philosophe Günther Anders.
