Record-breaking temperatures were recorded across the globe in 2023. Without climate action, adverse climate-related health impacts are expected to worsen worldwide, affecting billions of people. Temperatures in Europe are warming at twice the rate of the global average, threatening the health of populations across the continent and leading to unnecessary loss of life. The Lancet Countdown in Europe was established in 2021, to assess the health profile of climate change aiming to stimulate European social and political will to implement rapid health-responsive climate mitigation and adaptation actions. In 2022, the collaboration published its indicator report, tracking progress on health and climate change via 33 indicators and across five domains.

Na de hevige boerenprotesten en de politieke beslissingen die in het verlengde daarvan genomen werden, in het nadeel van natuur en milieu, reageert nu ook het brede middenveld. Met een open brief benadrukt WWF, samen met meer dan 50 organisaties, dat natuur niet het probleem is, maar een belangrijk deel van de oplossing. Nu maatregelen voor natuurherstel terugdraaien, is een verduiveld slecht idee. Het maakt een doeltreffende aanpak van de uitdagingen waar we als maatschappij voor staan onmogelijk. 'Dit gaat ons allemaal aan. Wij vragen een oplossingsgerichte dialoog.'

De landbouwlobby en de daaraan verbonden politici richten het boerenprotest op de natuur. Ze spelen landbouw en natuur tegen elkaar uit. Daarmee laten ze én de bevolking én de boeren stikken. We hebben immers allemaal recht op een gezonde bodem, propere lucht en zuiver water. Natuurpunt komt op voor een sterk natuurnetwerk en een gezond milieu. Wie de milieumaatregelen probeert af te zwakken en de pijlen op de natuur richt, leidt de aandacht enkel af van de essentie: het falende landbouwbeleid waar vooral de boer de dupe van is. Landschapsarchitect en auteur Louis De Jaeger heeft begrip voor de acties van de boeren. Volgens hem heeft het huidige landbouwmodel geen toekomst en is het tijd om samen aan een nieuw verhaal te schrijven, een verhaal waarbij de landbouw de natuur beschermt én verbetert.

In zijn omgeving ziet MO*redacteur John Vandaele ‘gelukkige deals tussen (bio)boeren en burgers, dikwijls van onderuit’. Die steken schril af tegen de manier waarop landbouw de voorbije decennia vaak als pasmunt diende om andere belangen en sectoren te dienen.

Renaat Devreese runt al 25 jaar een biologische geitenboerderij in Klemskerke, een deelgemeente van De Haan. Hoewel hij de kwaadheid van de boeren begrijpt, doet hij niet mee aan het boerenprotest.

Natuurbeschermers en klimaatactivisten zijn verontwaardigd dat hun wegblokkades zwaar worden aangepakt en gecriminaliseerd, terwijl wegblokkades door boeren onaangeroerd blijven. Hun woede is terecht, maar ze richten zich tegen de verkeerde vijand. Het boerenprotest is terecht. Dat het niet zo hard wordt aangepakt klopt ook, maar er zit een andere tragiek achter die protesten die we niet mogen ontkennen. Ten gronde voeren boeren en klimaatactivisten dezelfde strijd.
