The planetary boundaries concept presents a set of nine planetary boundaries within which humanity can continue to develop and thrive for generations to come

Human activities are threatening to push the Earth system beyond its planetary boundaries, risking catastrophic and irreversible global environmental change. Action is urgently needed, yet well-intentioned policies designed to reduce pressure on a single boundary can lead, through economic linkages, to aggravation of other pressures. In particular, the potential policy spillovers from an increase in the global carbon price onto other critical Earth system processes has received little attention to date. To this end, we explore the global environmental effects of pricing carbon, beyond its effect on carbon emissions. We find that the case for carbon pricing globally becomes even stronger in a multi-boundary world, since it can ameliorate many other planetary pressures. It does however exacerbate certain planetary pressures, largely by stimulating additional biofuel production. Begin juni 1972 en tijdens de afgelopen week was er in Stockholm een VN Earth Summit. De eerste leidde tot een reeks van Earth Summits, de oprichting van het United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) en een reeks van andere initiatieven, zoals het IPCC. In 1972 maakte men zich grote zorgen over het milieu en de schade die wij veroorzaken. Dat doen we nu, vijftig jaar later nog. We hebben gefaald. De kans op een duurzame en rechtvaardige wereld neemt af, maar die kans bestaat wel degelijk; als we willen. En wie zou dat niet willen?

C'était il y a 50 ans ! En 1972, se tenait le premier sommet de la Terre à Stockholm. Ces 2 et 3 juin, la capitale suédoise accueille de nouveau la communauté internationale pour célébrer cet anniversaire mais surtout pour donner un nouvel élan à l'action environnementale alors que les défis sont toujours plus importants. Le secrétaire général de l'Onu Antonio Guterres et l'envoyé spécial du président des États-Unis pour le climat John Kerry figurent parmi les personnalités devant participer à la conférence.

Après la 5e limite officiellement passée en janvier 2022, une équipe internationale vient de publier une nouvelle étude qui démontre que la limite planétaire du cycle de l’eau douce a été franchie. Cette fois-ci, les chercheurs du Potsdam Institute se sont associés au Stockholm Resilience Center et sont arrivés à cette conclusion après avoir inclus pour la première fois « l’eau verte » – l’eau disponible pour les plantes – dans l’évaluation de la limite planétaire.
