Earth’s average temperature rose more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels in 2024 for the first time – a critical threshold in the climate crisis. At the same time, major armed conflicts continue to rage in Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan and elsewhere. What should be increasingly clear is that war now needs to be understood as unfolding in the shadow of climate breakdown. The relationship between war and climate change is complex. But here are three reasons why the climate crisis must reshape how we think about war.

Het gaat om de grootste daling sinds het begin van de metingen, aldus de onderzoekers van het Australian Institute of Marine Sciences (AIMS). Volgens de onderzoekers is de klimaatcrisis de voornaamste oorzaak.

Nadat een recente hittegolf Europa van Portugal tot Turkije teisterde komt er in augustus een tweede meer intense golf aan die zich volgens voorspellingen zal uitstrekken tot heel Frankrijk, de Benelux en ook Noordelijk Europa treft. De onwil om deze klimaatcrisis ernstig te nemen dreigt onomkeerbare gevolgen te hebben.
