Le ministre américain de l'Energie Chris Wright a estimé mercredi que l'Agence internationale de l'énergie (AIE) devait "laisser tomber" son travail sur la question du changement climatique pour se concentrer sur la sécurité énergétique. "Je veux obtenir le soutien des autres nations de cette noble organisation pour travailler avec nous afin de pousser l'AIE à laisser tomber le climat. Ça, c'est de la politique", a déclaré M. Wright lors d'une réunion ministérielle à Paris. Le ministre a menacé par le passé de retirer les États-Unis de l'AIE, à moins que celle-ci ne réforme sa manière de fonctionner.
