Vandaag rijden er amper personenwagens op waterstof over onze wegen. Ooit, een jaar of 15 geleden, leek de toekomst de waterstofwagen toe te lachen. Ook in de Europese plannen om de uitstoot van de transportsector te vergroenen, lijkt er amper nog rekening mee gehouden te worden. Hoe zou het nog zijn met de waterstofwagen?

Spanje en Portugal krijgen al een paar dagen af te rekenen met bijzonder slecht weer en beterschap is niet meteen in zicht. In de Spaanse regio Andalusië is code rood afgekondigd voor zware regenval. In Portugal is een dode gevallen en geldt code oranje voor de hele kustlijn. Het slechte weer wordt veroorzaakt door de zuidelijke ligging van de straalstroom. Yet in many regions of the world, water problems no longer resemble a crisis in the conventional sense. They represent a post-crisis failure state in which human–water systems have exceeded their hydrological carrying capacities, and societies have spent beyond their sustainable hydrological budgets for so long that critical water assets are depleted, some ecosystem damages are irreversible on human time scales, and a return to “normal” is infeasible even with prohibitive economic, social, and environmental costs.
