La technique employée pour fissurer la roche-mère et en extraire le méthane, aussi appelé dans ce cas « gaz du schiste », faisait l’objet d’un moratoire sur l’île depuis 2019 en raison des controverses soulevées par son impact. En plus de contribuer à l’exploitation des énergies fossiles et aux émissions de gaz à effet de serre, la fracturation est soupçonnée d’être la cause de tremblements de terre et de fissures dans des bâtiments, ce qui engendre l’opposition des riverains et des écologistes.
