De ijskappen op Groenland en Antarctica hebben de voorbije 50 jaar 11 biljoen ton ijs verloren. Dat heeft de wereldwijde zeespiegel met meer dan 3 centimeter doen stijgen. Uit een grootschalig internationaal satellietonderzoek blijkt bovendien dat de hoofdoorzaak niet het smelten van ijs aan het oppervlak is, maar gletsjers die steeds sneller de oceaan in stromen.
