Le procès intenté par l’agriculteur Hugues Falys à TotalEnergies pour sa responsabilité dans le dérèglement climatique débute ce mercredi 19 novembre devant le tribunal de l’entreprise de Tournai. We are hurtling toward climate chaos. The planet's vital signs are flashing red. The consequences of human-driven alterations of the climate are no longer future threats but are here now. This unfolding emergency stems from failed foresight, political inaction, unsustainable economic systems, and misinformation. Almost every corner of the biosphere is reeling from intensifying heat, storms, floods, droughts, or fires. The window to prevent the worst outcomes is rapidly closing. In early 2025, the World Meteorological Organization reported that 2024 was the hottest year on record (WMO 2025a). This was likely hotter than the peak of the last interglacial, roughly 125,000 years ago (Gulev et al. 2021, Kaufman and McKay 2022). Rising levels of greenhouse gases remain the driving force behind this escalation. These recent developments emphasize the extreme insufficiency of global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mark the beginning of a grim new chapter for life on Earth.

The latest Lancet Countdown report warns that health impacts of climate change are worsening, with millions dying needlessly each year due to fossil fuel dependence, growing greenhouse gas emissions, and failure to adequately adapt. As some countries and companies rollback on climate commitments, local and grassroots leadership is building momentum for a healthier future.​ The report represents the work of 128 experts from 71 institutions, monitoring progress across 57 indicators – from heat-related deaths to bank lending to fossil fuels – providing the most comprehensive assessment yet of the links between climate change and health.

Nog maar 2 jaar geleden keurden de Europese lidstaten en het Europees Parlement de wet goed die autofabrikanten feitelijk verplicht om vanaf 2035 alleen nog nieuwe auto's op de markt te brengen die geen CO2 uitstoten. Maar vorige week kondigde Duitse bondskanselier Friedrich Merz aan dat hij er alles aan zal doen om zo'n "hard einde" voor de benzine- en dieselauto's te voorkomen. Ook vanuit de Europese auto-industrie groeit de druk op de Europese Commissie om de wet, een belangrijk onderdeel van de Green Deal, bij te sturen.

Récemment, en parcourant l’actualité, j’ai été frappée par un article annonçant que le pétrole zéro carbone serait bientôt une réalité. Rien que ce slogan suffit à provoquer l’incrédulité. Comment cette ressource carbonée fossile, dont l’usage principal est lié à l’énergie et qui génère annuellement des milliards de tonnes de dioxyde de carbone, pourrait-elle être présentée comme totalement exempte d’impact climatique ? Cette surprise n’aurait pourtant pas dû être totale. Les discours contemporains en lien avec l’énergie regorgent d’expressions analogues. Toutefois, ces formulations séduisantes, habilement façonnées et largement relayées dans l’espace médiatique, ne sont pas sans risque. Elles esquissent le mirage d’un avenir énergétique affranchi de contraintes et de conséquences environnementales.

En 2015, l’Accord de Paris sur le climat semblait signer une nouvelle ère, celle du consensus international face à la gravité du dérèglement climatique, celle du passage à l’action.
