Higher methane emissions from gas infrastructure have negated much of U.S. climate progress in the past two decades, a new study shows.
Consumers ending up shouldering most of the costs of installing and operating CCS in the UK, a new report has found.
The startup Gigablue announced with fanfare this year that it reached a historic milestone: selling 200,000 carbon credits to fund what it describes as a groundbreaking technology in the fight against climate change . But outside scientists frustrated by the lack of information released by the company say serious questions remain about whether Gigablue’s technology works as the company describes. Their questions showcase tensions in an industry built on little regulation and big promises — and a tantalizing chance to profit.
A study measured methane flow from more than 450 nonproducing wells across Canada, but thousands more remain unevaluated.
Climate experts expressed shock and dismay at the move. “It would be a bit like unplugging the equipment that monitors the vital signs of a patient that is critically ill,” one said.
Dozens of companies and academic groups are pitching the same theory: that sinking rocks, nutrients, crop waste or seaweed in the ocean could lock away climate-warming carbon dioxide for centuries or more. Nearly 50 field trials have taken place in the past four years, with startups raising hundreds of millions in early funds. But the field remains rife with debate over the consequences for the oceans if the strategies are deployed at large scale, and over the exact benefits for the climate. Critics say the efforts are moving too quickly and with too few guardrails.
Limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees C is essential for avoiding the worst climate change impacts, but doing so requires cutting emissions 42% by 2030 and 56% by 2035. Current policies alone will achieve less than a 1% reduction.
La Commission européenne s’est réjouie jeudi 31 octobre d’une baisse des émissions nettes de gaz à effet de serre de 8,3 % en 2023 dans l’UE, par rapport à l’année précédente, grâce au développement des énergies renouvelables.
This report reveals the tactics of Big Meat and Dairy companies to delay, distract, and derail action on transforming the food system, mirroring strategies used by the tobacco and fossil fuel industries. Food systems are responsible for around a third of global greenhouse gas emissions, with approximately 60% coming from animal agriculture, the largest source of man-made methane emissions.
Humanity is not on track to avoid the deadliest effects of climate change, according to University at Buffalo researcher Holly Jean Buck. "Our plans are not adequate to meet the goal of limiting the Earth's temperature increase to no more than 1.5℃ by 2050," said Buck, Ph.D., assistant professor of environment and sustainability....
UK tops all league tables for highly polluting form of travel, with a flight taking off every six minutes last year
Investigation into Verra carbon standard finds most are ‘phantom credits’ and may worsen global heating
Carbon offsets can help achieve emissions goals, some experts argue, while others say they are actively dangerous
Carbon credits and offsets do not have a great record but the funds they raise are a vital part in fight against deforestation
If 15 planned coal mining projects in Australia enter operation they would boost the country’s methane emissions from the dirtiest fossil fuel by nearly a fifth, according to an analysis from energy think tank Ember.
Les émissions de ce gaz, responsable de 25 % de la hausse des températures depuis l’ère préindustrielle, atteignent des records. Mais leur réduction partielle, et rapide, est à portée de main.
From the seemingly inexorable increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to the rapid growth in green energy
Failure to cut carbon emissions means ‘rapid transformation of societies’ is only option to limit impacts, report says
Scientists warn world ‘is heading in wrong direction’ amid rise in nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide and methane.Atmospheric levels of all three greenhouse gases have reached record highs, according to a study by the World Meteorological Organization, which scientists say means the world is “heading in the wrong direction”.
The EU is on track to break a promise to cut methane emissions by 30% by 2030 made due to a “policy vacuum” on livestock emissions, a report has warned. Most of Europe’s methane emissions come from agriculture – particularly livestock – but the EU has avoided using policy levers such as its €387bn common agricultural policy to directly tackle the problem
The European Union is embarking on an experiment that will expand its climate policies to imports for the first time. It’s called a carbon border adjustment, and it aims to level the playing field for the EU’s domestic producers by taxing energy-intensive imports like steel and cement that are high in greenhouse gas emissions but aren’t already covered by climate policies in their home countries.
Group says ‘climate disaster’ vehicles targeted in nine countries including the UK, France and Canada
Levels of the gas are growing at a record rate and natural sources like wetlands are the cause, but scientists don’t know how to curb it.
Shallow deposits of frozen methane beneath oceans may be more vulnerable to thawing than previously known.
Methane has a mixture of both natural and anthropogenic sources. Around 40% of methane emissions comes from natural sources, while 60% comes from anthropogenic sources such as agriculture, fossil fuel exploitation and landfills. In situ methane measurements from 2020 showed the largest annual increase of methane concentrations since the 1980s, with this record surpassed in 2021. The year of 2020 was unique owing to the global pandemic, yet methane concentrations continued to rise despite a reduction in economic activity.
A new Imperial analysis has found that biogas and biomethane, while more climate friendly, leak up to twice as much methane as previously thought. Although biogas and biomethane remain climate-friendlier than non-renewable alternatives, the researchers call for better monitoring and fixing of leaks to ensure biogas and biomethane continue to live up to their green credentials.
More climate scientists say emissions cuts are not enough and we face imminent catastrophe unless deliberately altering the climate. What are the options and challenges? Jem Bendell interviewed Dr Ye Tao who is proposing we use massive amounts of mirrors to reduce harm in the short term.
