Global energy and materials are essential to the functioning of the economy and have significant implications for macroeconomics and the environment. At the same time, the world is not on track to meet Paris Agreement goals. This paper documents two stylized facts that connect these observations. First, the world economy is characterized by large embedded emissions and materials: different energies and materials are deeply entwined and interdependent. This has historically led to additive – rather than substitution – dynamics in energy and materials on a global scale. Second, historically there has been a strong positive correlation between efficiency in resource use and total resource use at a global scale. We synthesize these observations by introducing the Generalized Jevons Paradox (GJP). Cet article rapporte la difficulté du secteur manufacturier en Grande Bretagne à faire face à l’augmentation du cout de l'énergie. Dans l'ombre de cet article apparait ce qui sera la réalité à un moment donné, sans pétrole bon marché, l'industrie manufacturière ne peut pas fonctionner dans les conditions actuelles. Le contrat social sera rompu et il faudra réinventer une manière de vivre ensemble. Current energy projections often envision an expansion of nuclear capacities to decarbonize future energy systems. However, this contrasts with the historic and current status of the nuclear industry, marked by techno-economic challenges for both light-water and non-light-water reactor technologies. Regardless, projections of strong nuclear growth have persisted since the 1970s. This paper investigates the “nuclear energy paradox” which shows the recurring divergence between historical projections and actual developments. A data compilation of long-term energy projections from international organizations such as the IAEA and the IEA as well as energy system models like GCAM and MESSAGE, as used in the IPCC, reveal a recurring pattern of high-growth projections for nuclear power. Such projections often rest on techno-economic assumptions such as substantial cost reductions. However, understanding decline rates – the annual rate at which production declines from existing oil and gas fields – is crucial for assessing the outlook for oil and gas supply and, by extension, for market balances. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has long examined this issue, and a detailed understanding of decline rates is at the heart of IEA modelling and analysis, underpinning the insights provided by the scenarios in the World Energy Outlook. Verso energy va fournir à l'industrie sidérurgique de la Sarre, en Allemagne, de l'hydrogène produit en Moselle à partir d'électricité "verte", ont annoncé vendredi l'énergéticien français et le groupe sidérurgique allemand SHS (Stahl-Holding-Saar), qui pourra ainsi décarboner sa production. Lors d'une conférence de presse à Dillingen, dans la Sarre, Verso energy et SHS ont annoncé avoir signé un contrat qui prévoit la fourniture d'au moins 6.000 tonnes d'hydrogène sur une période de dix ans à compter de 2029. Cela s'inscrit dans la stratégie de décarbonation du groupe allemand, qui entend remplacer le charbon par l'hydrogène dans son processus de fabrication de l'acier.

This essay takes up and extends an analysis of the ambitions of the energy transition presented during the conference entitled “L’erreur fondamentale de la transition”, held in Lausanne in December 2022, at the annual Switzerland ShiftersDay. The intervention questioned the conceptualization of energy transition, given possible inaccuracies, or errors in the categorization of reality. It is not certain that the energy contained in the wind, solar radiation, or atoms is equivalent to hydrocarbon energy for human societalneeds. Although all energies are theoretically convertible into one another, the assumption that any type of energy can always be replaced by another is likely to prove false. An energy transition based on the substitution of energies would then be inconceivable.

SMRs are defined as reactors with a capacity of 300 megawatts (MW) or less with serial factory production of reactor components (or ‘modules’). No SMRs have been built, but dozens of small (<300 MW) power reactors have been built in numerous countries, without factory production of reactor components.

They don't burn fossil fuels, so it appears that they might be helpful to the environment. Energy modeling misses important points. I believe that profitability signals are much more important.

Energy return on investment (EROI) is a biophysical and ecological economics concept that is useful to think about how organisms, ecosystems and societies must obtain enough surplus energy returned from energy gathering activities to live, reproduce, and thrive. EROI can help us overcome the false dualism between nature and society. EROI is a useful metric for economics because it is based on immutable physical laws rather than sometimes arbitrary human preferences. It is essential for assessing useful power, energy trade-offs, efficiencies (and inefficiencies), resource depletion trends, resource quality, and surplus potentials of different fuels and technologies that power, or might power, our socio-economic systems. Apparent inconsistencies in the literature can generally be reduced or eliminated by paying careful attention and explicitly stating boundaries and definitions. After two years and 14 negotiation rounds to modernise the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT), the signatory states meet on 24 June 2022 to try to find a compromise.Three days before the conference, there are still no prospects of a genuinely ambitious reform, let alone one in line with the Paris Agreement. The only proposal on the table on which they may agree on June 24th will maintain the ECT protection of existing foreign investment in EU countries in fossil fuel for at least another decade and in gas power plants until 2040. In case an agreement in principle is reached by June 24th, the ECT might well be extended to several countries that host large fossil fuel investments.

Deux instituts d'études spécialisés ont appelé vendredi les pays du G20 à renforcer rapidement leurs engagements climatiques pour tenter de respecter les objectifs de l'accord de Paris comme ils l'ont promis lors de la dernière conférence climat COP26. Un récent rapport de l’AIE prévoit que la transition énergétique va multiplier par six d’ici 2050, la demande mondiale de métaux (https://www.iea.org/reports/the-role-of-critical-minerals-in-clean-energy-transitions). Il s’agit d’une moyenne : l’AIE estime que la multiplication de la demande variera de 20 à 40 pour le lithium, le graphite, le cobalt (voir à ce sujet, le dernier documentaire de Thierry Michel sur les guerres au Congo) et le nickel. Il sera de 7 pour les terres rares, dont l’approvisionnement est déjà critique. On va donc passer d’un système énergétique dépendant des fossiles à un autre dépendant des ressources naturelles.

Countries should move from coal to renewable energy without shifting to gas as a “transition” fuel to save money, as high gas prices and market volatility have made the fossil fuel an expensive option, analysis has found. Natural gas has long been touted as a “transition” fuel for economies dependent on coal for their power needs, as it has lower carbon dioxide emissions than coal but requires similar centralised infrastructure, and gas-fired power stations take only a couple of years to build. Veolia et Waga Energy ont annoncé jeudi le démarrage d'une unité de production de biométhane, la plus grande de France selon eux, installée sur le site de stockage de déchets de Claye-Souilly (Seine-et-Marne). Le site doit permettre de produire 120 GWh de gaz renouvelable par an, l'équivalent de la consommation annuelle de 20.000 foyers, soulignent-ils. L'unité, automatisée et pilotée à distance, récupère et traite le biogaz des déchets enfouis pour le transformer en biométhane, selon la technologie d'épuration mise au point par l'entreprise grenobloise Waga Energy. Ce gaz vert est ensuite injecté directement dans le réseau de gaz exploité par GRDF.

Le gouvernement britannique, qui serait prêt selon la presse à reprendre les activités au Royaume-Uni du géant russe Gazprom en cas de faillite, a assuré mercredi travailler avec l'ensemble des fournisseurs à la continuité de l'approvisionnement des clients. Gazprom Energy, branche britannique du groupe russe, fournit du gaz et de l'électricité à plus de 30.000 entreprises privées ou organisations publiques au Royaume-Uni.

Le marché mondial des équipements industriels de captage et de stockage du dioxyde de carbone (CO2) devrait exploser d'ici 2025 pour tenter de freiner le réchauffement climatique, selon le cabinet norvégien de recherche énergétique Rystad Energy. Ce marché des équipements de captage et stockage du CO2 (CCS) devrait "quadrupler" entre 2022 et 2025, pour atteindre en cumulé plus de 50 milliards de dollars en 2025, indique Rystad Energy dans une étude publiée jeudi.

Les gaz à effet de serre émis par les exploitations minières et gazières en Australie, un des plus grands producteurs de charbon et de gaz naturel au monde, sont supérieurs aux engagements des exploitants, selon une association environnementale. Au cours de 18 mois d'une enquête, publiée jeudi en Australie, les chercheurs de l'Australian Conservation Foundation ont ainsi découvert qu'une entreprise de combustibles fossiles sur cinq déclarait que ses émissions avait dépassé la quantité approuvée par le gouvernement. À lui seul, un gazoduc situé dans l'État du Queensland, exploité par Origin Energy, a rejeté 2 000% de plus que la quantité prévue avant l'approbation du projet.

The nations that make up the G7 have pumped billions of dollars more into fossil fuels than they have into clean energy since the COVID-19 pandemic, despite their promises of a green recovery. A new analysis reveals that the countries attending committed $189 billion to support oil, coal, and gas between January 2020 and March 2021. In comparison, the same countries spent $147 billion on clean forms of energy. The support for fossil fuels from seven of the world’s richest nations included measures to remove or downgrade environmental regulations as well as direct funding of oil, gas and coal.

Alternative energy technologies have trouble preserving expectations. Human psychology and political/economic institutions turn a technically difficult predicament into a nearly hopeless trap. We are lamentably ill-equipped to appreciate the abnormality of our time and assess a more accurate picture of what long-term “normal” must look like.

The Energy Charter Treaty is a little-known investment protection treaty. It allows foreign investors to claim billions in compensation from the signatory states before international arbitration tribunals if the companies feel treated unfairly by the states energy or climate policies. This procedure has numerous problems: The treaty is one-sided, because only companies can sue states. It is extremely vaguely worded and thus a gateway for investors to sue. The arbitration courts meet in secret like shadow courts. In some cases, it is not even made public that there are proceedings at all.

On Thursday night the Danish government voted in favour of the plans to cancel the country’s next North Sea oil and gas licensing round, 80 years after it first began exploring its hydrocarbon reserves. Denmark’s 55 existing oil and gas platforms, scattered across 20 oil and gas fields, will be allowed to continue extracting fossil fuels but the milestone decision to end the hunt for new reserves in the ageing basin will guarantee an end to Denmark’s fossil fuel production.

En outre, les stocks se remplissent, si bien que de nombreux producteurs de pétrole sont contraints de fermer des puits, faute de demande ou d'endroit pour les mettre en place.

The nuclear age wanted to give the oil and gas age a hand up.

A novel methodology is developed to dynamically assess the energy and material investments required over time to achieve the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources in the electricity sector. The obtained results indicate that a fast transition achieving a 100% renewable electric system globally by 2060 consistent with the Green Growth narrative could decrease the EROI of the energy system from current ~12:1 to ~3:1 by the mid-century, stabilizing thereafter at ~5:1. These EROI levels are well below the thresholds identified in the literature required to sustain industrial complex societies. Moreover, this transition could drive a substantial re-materialization of the economy, exacerbating risk availability in the future for some minerals. Hence, the results obtained put into question the consistence and viability of the Green Growth narrative.

We develop roadmaps to transform the all-purpose energy infrastructures (electricity, transportation, heating/cooling, industry, agriculture/forestry/fishing) of 139 countries to ones powered by wind, water, and sunlight (WWS). The roadmaps envision 80% conversion by 2030 and 100% by 2050. WWS not only replaces business-as-usual (BAU) power, but also reduces it ∼42.5% because the work: energy ratio of WWS electricity exceeds that of combustion (23.0%), WWS requires no mining, transporting, or processing of fuels (12.6%), and WWS end-use efficiency is assumed to exceed that of BAU (6.9%). Converting may create ∼24.3 million more permanent, full-time jobs than jobs lost. It may avoid ∼4.6 million/year premature air-pollution deaths today and ∼3.5 million/year in 2050; ∼$22.8 trillion/year (12.7 ¢/kWh-BAU-all-energy) in 2050 air-pollution costs; and ∼$28.5 trillion/year (15.8 ¢/kWh-BAU-all-energy) in 2050 climate costs.
