Landbouwers uit heel Europa protesteren in Straatsburg tegen het Mercosur-handelsakkoord. Volgens hen dreigt Europa overspoeld te worden met spotgoedkope en minderwaardige landbouwproducten uit Zuid-Amerika, zoals rundvlees, kip, eieren en soja. Dat zou Europese landbouwbedrijven in een moeilijke positie brengen. Maar hoe gegrond is die vrees? VRT NWS onderzocht 3 bezorgdheden die de voorbije maanden steeds opnieuw opdoken tijdens de boerenprotesten.
Bij een steekproef in verschillende Europese landen zijn er TFA aangetroffen in graanproducten zoals brood, koekjes en speculaas. TFA is de kleinste variant van de forever chemical PFAS. De actiegroep Pesticide Action Network (PAN), die de testen liet uitvoeren, roept de overheid op om breder te meten naar TFA-resten in voedsel, en vraagt dat PFAS-bevattende pesticiden uitgedoofd worden.
In alledaagse graanproducten zoals brood en speculaas is PFAS teruggevonden. Steekproeven door de Bond Beter Leefmilieu en PAN Europe vinden hoge concentraties trifluorazijnzuur (TFA), een afbraakproduct van pesticiden.

Landschapsarchitect en auteur Louis De Jaeger heeft begrip voor de acties van de boeren. Volgens hem heeft het huidige landbouwmodel geen toekomst en is het tijd om samen aan een nieuw verhaal te schrijven, een verhaal waarbij de landbouw de natuur beschermt én verbetert.
