Permafrost and glaciers in the high Arctic form an impermeable ‘cryospheric cap’ that traps a large reservoir of subsurface methane, preventing it from reaching the atmosphere. Cryospheric vulnerability to climate warming is making releases of this methane possible. On Svalbard, where air temperatures are rising more than two times faster than the average for the Arctic, glaciers are retreating and leaving behind exposed forefields that enable rapid methane escape. Here we document how methane-rich groundwater springs have formed in recently revealed forefields of 78 land-terminating glaciers across central Svalbard, bringing deep-seated methane gas to the surface. Waters collected from these springs during February–May of 2021 and 2022 are supersaturated with methane up to 600,000 times greater than atmospheric equilibration. Recent verscheen bij uitgeverij Atlas 'De vloek van de nootmuskaat' van Amitav Ghosh en kreeg als ondertitel 'Boodschap aan een planeet in crisis' en eind 2022 publiceerde uitgeverij EPO 'Te groot om ons voor te stellen'. Wil Heeffer las ze allebei: “Ghosh schrijft op uiterst toegankelijke wijze over de nog altijd voortdurende effecten van het kolonialisme op natuur en mens.

Meer dan 100 mensen voeren vandaag actie aan de aandeelhoudersvergadering van Fluxys in Brussel. Samen met Vredesactie, Greenpeace, Tegengas|Dégaze en Bond Beter Leefmilieu (BBL) klagen ze aan dat Fluxys blijft investeren in fossiel gas, en zo de oorlog in Oekraïne in stand houdt en de gezondheid schaadt van gemeenschappen in de VS. “Wij eisen dat Fluxys uit fossiel gas stapt - voor het klimaat, de mensenrechten en de vrede.”

"Make Polluters Pay!" roepen wetenschappers en klimaatactivisten die nu de ingang blokkeren van de Aviapartner Executive Lounge en de Luxaviation terminal, exclusieve faciliteiten voor de superrijken die met privéjets van en naar Brussel vliegen. 
Deze geweldloze actie maakt deel uit van een wereldwijde campagne waarin wordt geëist dat degenen die het meest verantwoordelijk zijn voor de klimaatnoodsituatie, stoppen met hun destructieve levensstijl.

In een reactie op de publicatie vandaag van het rapport van werkgroep III van het IPCC over de beperking van klimaatverandering, zei Nafkote Dabi, hoofd klimaatbeleid van Oxfam: "Dit IPCC-rapport laat niets aan het toeval over. De sombere en meedogenloze waarheid over de opwarming van de aarde is deze: als er niet op grote schaal actie wordt ondernomen, zal de mensheid te maken krijgen met toenemende honger, ziekte, een kelderende economie, massale migratie en ondraaglijke hitte. Een opwarmende planeet is de grootste noodsituatie voor de mensheid.”

The annual "adaptation gap" report — which published Thursday amid the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow — found that the estimated costs to adapt to the worst effects of warming temperatures such as droughts, floods and rising seas in low-income countries are five to 10 times higher than how much money is currently flowing into those regions.
